The West LA Democratic Club, in conjunction with the Westchester Democratic Club, held

a Judicial Candidates Forum on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at St. Bede's Episcopal Church.

Guest speaker Sharan Kyle led off the  forum with an informative discussion on the American penal system. Ms. Kyle is the prolific writer and voice at the L.A. Progressive. The penal system is a subject

she has become only too aware of due to the disheartening experience of someone very close to her.

The forum was attended by five L.A. Superior Court judicial candidates and exceptionally well
moderated by WLADC President Alan Bail and Westchester Democratic Club Vice President

William Roberts.  The candidates fielded challenging and insightful  questions prepared by our

moderators.

With the entirety of the voting public generally unfamiliar with judges, this type of event
gains in value. We were able to learn that all five professed to be Democrats with the same
values that most of us have on topics such as the death penalty and the three strikes law.

Therefore, on the upcoming June ballot you can look for the following names:

Craig Gold - office 3

Douglas Weitzman - office 38

Shannon Knight - ofice 65

Eric Harmon - office 114

Ben Brees  - office 114

For more information that may help you decide on the candidates, you can start with a

judge voter's guide here.

The WLADC did endorse all unopposed candidates along with Eric Harmon.

At our March event Congressman Henry Waxman was our guest speaker.

For those who haven't been there, our new venue of St. Bedes Episocopal Church in Mar Vista
has proven to be more attractive and popular than our former home in Venice. Everything makes
it a vast improvement. There is plenty of parking, less traffic, better acoustics and lighting,
more comfortable seating and  a more intimate and informal setting to better
interact with our speakers. We hope to see you there.

All our events are listed on the web site and are well publicized in our E Letter and

also appear  in the Argonaut and Venice, Mar Vista and Santa Monica Patch.

                           TWO ACTION ITEMS......

Presently, the Insurance Commissioner does not have the power of approval over healthcare insurance rate changes.  We support

the initiative that will change that.

We are circulating the Official Ballot Petition that, if sucessful in

reaching the required number of signatures, qualifies the initiative

for the November ballot.

We will be asking people to sign the petition at our voter registration

tables. We need this initiative to get control of health insurance prices in California. Insurance companies will have to justify their rate

increases thru the state's Insurance Commissioner.

To download the petition go to

                  www.justifyrates.org

Next ....

Protect Schools and  Public Safety Initiative

There are too many petitions  floating around so don't get  confused. This is the Governor's  initiative to save our schools  from drastic cuts in a fair and  orderly way.

We must do  what the Republicans have made impossible  at the federal level:

Sensible taxes for  those who can well  afford it to cut the deficit  and maintain

our schools and public safety.

California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones
recently appeared at the Palisades Dem Club's
"The State of Healthcare: 2012 and Beyond" event
March 25 at Bergamot Station. His message can
be summarized in two parts. He strongly
supports the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare)
which has many benefits for the country (UNLESS
the RIGHT WING Supreme Court strikes it
down!!).

However, secondly, he emphasized the need for
passage of the above proposition which gives him
the power to regulate rate increases.
